I studied in London and completed my PhD at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and am now based in Helsinki. My doctoral submission, which comprised a portfolio of compositions and a written thesis, explored the way in which time can flow in music. Starting from the premise that music can appear to flow forwards through time, stand still, or to go around in circles, I examined the way other composers before me have created and combined these temporal states and explored how I can productively use and develop such techniques in my own composition work.
Despite the potentially theoretical and abstract nature of this approach, I found it to be an ideal vehicle for me to combine all the various types of music and sound which I am interested in. Through this, I aim to embrace a variety of musical styles and techniques, old and new, and try to combine these in a colourful and kaleidoscopic way which nonetheless maintains a sense of narrative, flow, and cohesion.
