Vladimir Mendelssohn Composition Competition

Ascoli Piceno Festival is pleased to announce the first edition of the “Vladimir Mendelssohn Competition”, open to composers aged 18 to 35. The competition aims to stimulate the creativity of young composers, according to the values that characterized the music and life of Vladimir Mendelssohn (1949-2021), visionary composer, violist, teacher and artistic director.
The jury will be composed by Osvaldo Golijov (President), Silvia Colasanti, Fabrice Gregorutti, Daniel Rowland and Giovanni Sollima, all friends and collaborators of Vladimir Mendelssohn.
Candidates will have to submit a composition for viola solo, viola and violin, viola and cello, string trio (violin, viola and cello) or string quartet (2 violins, viola, cello), lasting between 7 and 12 minutes. The composition must be inspired by one of the many facets of the personality of Vladimir Mendelssohn. For this first edition, the chosen theme is “sense of humor”.
The Vladimir Mendelssohn Competition will include a live final concert in Ascoli on Sept. 13, 2022, where the three finalist compositions will be performed by the Elaia Quartet. The concert will be recorded for radio and broadcast in Italy (RAI) and abroad.
The first prize of the Vladimir Mendelssohn Competition will include a cash prize of 3,000 Euros and the publication of the score at Universal Edition Wien via scodo, with the activation of a scodo – by the Universal Edition “professional plus” account for 1 year. The winning composition will also be performed in twelve international festivals, partners of the competition: Artenetra (France), Con Brio Festival Osnabruck (Germany), Dusseldorf ChamberJam Festival, Kammermusik Sylt (Germany), Konvergencie (Slovak Republic), Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, O / Modernt (Sweden), Oxford Chamber Music Festival (UK), Stift International Music Festival (Holland), Sonoro Festival (Romania), ”Sergio Gaggia” Association (Italy), Staunton Chamber Music Festival (USA).
