Madetoja Foundation
The Madetoja Foundation awards grants for projects involving the works of Leevi Madetoja, for commissioning new Finnish music and for recording contemporary Finnish art music.
The next application period is from 1 to 31 January 2026.
1. Leevi Madetoja projects
The Madetoja Foundation awards grants for projects involving the compositions of Leevi Madetoja. No limitations are imposed on the form of such a project: it may be a publication, academic research, a concert or stage production, a recording or any other project focusing on the career and works of Madetoja. The project must be of artistic or scholarly value, and it must introduce a novel or important perspective on Madetoja’s output.
2. Commissioning grants
Commissioning grants are awarded for commissioning new works of concert music from professional composers of art music. A commissioning grant must be applied for by a performer or other commissioner, e.g. a musician, an ensemble, a choir or a festival organiser. The commissioner may be Finnish or foreign, but the composer to be commissioned must be a Finnish citizen or resident in Finland. It is considered an advantage if the commissioner intends to retain the commissioned work in its repertoire for further performances.
The composer to be commissioned will receive an e-mail link notifying them of the application made by the commissioner and must use that link to confirm that the commission and its fee have been agreed with the composer. The commissioning agreement or letter of intent does not have to be attached to the application, but the grant application is not a substitute for the actual agreement specifying the composer’s fee and the parameters of the premiere, etc.
The composer must not confirm more than one application per application round. The application may be confirmed at any time during the application period (i.e. by 23.59 on 31 January).
No composer will be awarded commissioning grants in consecutive years
A composer who has been awarded a commissioning grant will not be eligible for a commissioning grant in the year immediately following. However, a commissioner may be awarded commissioning grants in consecutive years for commissioning different composers, particularly in cases where the commissioner can ensure that the commissioned works will be performed in prominent contexts.
The grant will be paid out once the commissioned work has been delivered to the commissioner.
3. Recording grant
A recording grant may be applied for by an organisation or an individual for non-commercial recordings of art music. A composer may also apply.
These grants are awarded to cover production costs of various kinds of recordings. The end product may be a physical or digital recording or any other form of recording intended for the general public and advantageous for the composer, e.g. a video.
These grants are principally intended to cover the actual production costs of recording projects.
Principally intended for non-institutional operators
The grants awarded by the Madetoja Foundation are principally intended for performers and organisations who do not receive significant public funding. However, institutions receiving public funding may be awarded a grant if their matched funding for the project is equal to or greater than the grant being applied for.
In the case of commissioning orchestral works, it is advantageous to have the orchestra contribute to the funding of the commission even if the actual commissioning is being done by an individual musician.
General terms and conditions
- Grants will not be awarded for projects that have already been completed.
- Grants will not be awarded for projects involving a composer who has another ongoing project that was awarded a grant by the Foundation.
- A commissioner may apply for a grant even if they have an ongoing project with another composer.
- Each applicant may submit one application in each grant category. However, an applicant with multiple applications will principally only be awarded a grant in one grant category.
- Organisations must attach their most recent financial statements and budget to their applications.
- For technical reasons, it is not possible to update applications after they have been submitted. If a project is awarded other funding after submitting the grant application, the Agent of the Foundation must be notified of this.

General information about the Madetoja Foundation
The Madetoja Foundation was established in 1997 on funds from a bequest by composer Leevi Madetoja (1887–1947). It is administered by the Society of Finnish Composers. The purpose of the Foundation is to promote the works of Leevi Madetoja and other Finnish musical creators.
The Foundation is an independent entity, but its Board of Directors is appointed by the General Meeting of the Society of Finnish Composers. The Society also supports the Foundation with the collective copyright royalties it receives from Kopiosto; these are used for instance for funding the recording grants.
For projects involving the publishing of sheet music of Madetoja’s works, grants may be applied for to the Leevi Madetoja Fund of the Society of Finnish Composers.
